Vodka

We rocked 160km yesterday and finished quite early at pick nick place near the highway. As many other places in Russia, it was a beautiful sandy place next to a small lake, but all this beautiful places are full of waste and trash of any kind. Imagine the picture: you sit on the edge of the sandy ground in a pinetree Forrest which steeply falls off to a little lake, the sun is just about to fall into the green forest on the opposite and the beams make a mysterious glim on the water. The roots of the trees reach out of the sand like arms that try to keep up the clothes to their body and form a bizarre lakeshore. In the middle of this scene a half sunken TV screen reaches out of the water surrounded by empty bottles of vodka. The roots successfully keep them selves covered by sand but also by the plastic bags and tires they simply can’t shake of. A fish that decided to avoid this view drifts along on his back to end up with the waste gathering at the shore.
“hello, I Alexei” I hear a voice from the back. A man with a vodka bottle in his hand asked us if we want to join the group of truck drivers obviously having a little party at the other side of the bay. We kindly reject his offer and go back to cooking our dinner. Noodles with butter.
Suddenly a big woman which obviously was drunk as well, turned up and nearly forced Paul to join the trucker party. She showed us pictures of her daughters and said that she could cook dinner for us much better. But we have to reject because we can’t leave all our stuff nor run the risk getting filled with vodka and having a hangover. After 20 minutes of talking she gives up and sadly walks back to the other group. On the on side we are glad to be alone again, on the other sad to not have taken the offer to a surly delicious and funny evening. On day on our trip we will hopefully have the time to take such an offer. But right now we have to hurry to get to Kazakhstan. Our visa in Russia is about to expire and it is still 700km to go, so a hangover would not be an option.
